There are many fine examples of existing seismic networks that have demonstrated solid performance during a large number of earthquakes. However, among these examples there are only a few events associated with real damage to civilian structures within the network´s area.

The question arises: what fraction of the highly-sophisticated infrastructure for data acquisition, communication, and data processing would stay operational during a major earthquake?
