A Fully Outfitted Strong Motion Station ideally Should Become Compact, Robust, and Cheap

The present generation of seismic online stations typically consists of a relatively complex assembly including: high-grade scientific instruments, computer systems, backup memory extensions, modems, rechargeable battery packs, chargers, and line power supplies—plus several feet of more or less elegant cabling. With a set-up like this, it is not trivial to find an adequate and safe location inside a school, firestation, or other public building.

Last but not least, an outdoor installation of this equipment—as would be required for portions of early-warning networks—is associated with a relatively high investment in site preparation. The infrastructure for an outdoor placement typically requires foundations and a container, line power or a mast with solar panels, protective fences, etc.
