General Issues > Sensor Conventional Seismic Sensors Today, the main debate is whether we should continue installing high-resolution force-balanced sensors, which provide the best chances for frequently triggering on small events. The minimal intrinsic noise, combined with the excellent signal dynamics of such systems, would allow us to set a very low trigger threshold, thus producing gigabytes of information per year. As a consequence, researchers could carry out some analyses without waiting for truly strong motion, which might be a benefit in terms of preparedness. However, this high-resolution approach brings down the number of observation points because of the higher cost per sensor.
